Let's teach for mastery — not test scores | Sal Khan

Would you choose to build a house on top of an unfinished foundation? Of course not. Why, then, do we rush students through education when they haven’t always grasped the basics? Yes, it’s complicated, but educator Sal Khan shares his plan to turn struggling students into scholars by helping them master concepts at their own pace.

  2. Ken Checkeye says:

    The question now becomes : what should you master? Who determines the goals when not everyone has the aptitude or desire to be a chemist or a structural engineer. Perhaps we learn the goals of the individual and prepare them for what they want to do without humiliating them because they don’t understand ap Calculus. This my friend is the challenge.

    Yes! Sal this is why i homeschool my kids. But society makes it so hard to do that! The 3500 dollars of funding for each child the gov gives to public school they give nothing to parents who homeschool. Even whist homeschooled kids do 75 precent better than public school kids!

  23. Macran says:

    The problem with this idea is that 90% of the schools on Earth still do not adapt this idea – it's kind of a snowball effect. Schools must have resources, money and obligation to do it imposed in advance (help from the government). Now let's say that the schools have it now. The students see it and they can learn the best way now. Otherwise not many people will want to change the system, for example;
    Students : If I would want to learn everything on my own, to master a topic, then I would be left behind the class, because they learn another topics now.
    Schools (headmasters, teachers) : If we would want to teach the students this way, we would need to change our system and we don't really have the help to do it from the government.
    And now, it's governments turn. They have the power to change this system but someone must ask the first question about it. As Khan said, we have resources and possibility to do it, but we have to act. Now obviously there is covid etc. but after it stops, the system must be changed, it is unimaginable change for better in learning industry. I'm interested what governments say about the idea, when it would change everything for better, even for every social layer.
    Welcome to comment this, I will be happy to talk about this
